Is My Cat Part Coon?

by Jose

My cat Suki is a 5 month old female. She came to our front door when she was around 2 months according to the vets and I'm just wondering if she is part Maine Coon.

Maine Coon Mix? DNA results say yes.

by Mark F.
(Iowa, USA)

Batman the Fridge Lord

Batman the Fridge Lord

This is Batman. He was dumped in a field next to the shelter we got him from when he was only a few months old.

He survived starvation and predation (he had puncture wounds on his neck from a coyote) and I adopted him when he was approximately 6 months old.

Right away I could tell he was a different type of cat that any I had previously. When he was 15 months old and was still growing, I KNEW I had a different type of cat. Long story short, I got a DNA test done when he turned 18mo. He is a verified Maine Coon mix! (and he's still growing :))

Please use these photos to help others that may be wondering.

Murray!

by Rainey
(Texas )

Note the thumbs

Note the thumbs

Murray is a nine year old very large cat he is short haired and has a toe or two extra on each foot.

He is not fat at all with a very large head and ears. Last vet visit he weight 23 pounds.

The people I got him from said he was part Maine Coon. I didn’t pay a lot of attention to that since he was just a free kitten but as he grew up he definitely seems special!

Maybe a Mix?

by Shannon
(West Virginia )

He is a rescue off the street.

He has the long tufts of hair in the ears and is voice-tresses. I believe is a tabby.

He is like a black color with Carmel spots/lines in him. He’s is soft and has a very fluffy tail. He does have hair between the toes.

Loves to "hide" and pounce. He loves to be near us and follows us around. I believe he is about 5 1/2-6 months old. I love him either way. I love his mustache.

Mr Beans Maine Coon?

by Ally
(USA)

Mr. Beans is super relaxed and bigger than the average cat.

I’ve had him since he was 3 weeks old, he’s a year old now, he’s maintained the “grinch feet” and ear tufts throughout.

His teeth are very big for his mouth, his canines poke out. he has a shaggy coat with different lengths in different places and big round eyes with with set ears and a fluffy tail.

Beautiful Mr. Beans
by: Mark F.

Mr. Beans definitely has a shape that screams "Cooooon". Body shape very similar to my verified Maine Coon mix. Since he is only 12 mo. in your picture you will really know if he continues to grow. Most moggie mixes are full grown at 12 mo. A coon can continue to grow since they take a few years to reach full maturity. Mine is 19mo and just had another growth spurt. Either way, Mr. Beans is super-special.

Is Archie Part Maine Coon?

Archie is a year old (ish) and from a shelter.

He is the only cat I’ve ever had that loves water, has big floofy paws and knocks everything off things.

He’s a cuddler but also playful but that could be his age.

Maine coon? Current age

Maine coon? Current age

This is Tiger. He showed up at my house one night, he was only 6 weeks old and crying to come in.

He is now 1 year and 5 months old. I have 2 other female cats in the house and he dominates them and acts like he’s the boss of the house.

He is extremely stubborn, not afraid of anything not even water and he lays anywhere and in the most vulnerable positions (like on his back with his tummy exposed) he just doesn’t care at all.

He’s very friendly and follows you everywhere. He is huge and very heavy. He always looks grumpy but he’s happy I think.

We think he is half Maine coon but not sure. I’d like to get a DNA test done.

January 2024

I adopted Buddy from a rescue home when he was 6 mos old. He is now 3yrs old, 16lbs, and appears to have some physical Maine Coon traits.

He does like to snuggle with me, and is ok with my husband, but only the two of us. As soon as anyone else comes into the house, he heads for downstairs.

Looks like a coon to me.
by: Mark F.

Looks and shaped just like my all-black verified coon mix. At 16 lbs and not fat, I'd say it is definitely a Maine Coon mix. Of course, the DNA thingy will tell you more. I used Basepaws DNA test for my cat. It is pricey, at about $160, but they frequently have sales. I got mine last September from Amazon at 50% off. Always remember, coon or not, they are all very special to us :)

Part Maine Coon?

by Shannon
(WV)

Quick rest

Quick rest

We found this kitty by a dumpster at a McDonald’s.

He is still a kitten if I have to guess about 4 months old. He loves to play/hunt.

He has tufts of hair growing in between his toes on the underside, couldn’t get a pic.

It is black and his pads are black His coat is still super soft. He has a long body when he stretches out. He likes to be held and loved.

But also loves his freedom. He likes to play with our dog. I know he isn’t full blooded and that is ok.

We weren’t even looking for another pet. No matter what we love this cutie pie.

ear furnishings
by: Michael F Vogel

The fur inside the ear in Maine Coon Nomenclature
is "ear furnishings." Ear Tufts are the spikes of
fur that stand erect off the tip of the ear like a
lynx or bobcat. You probably have a Maine Coon
Mix.

Charlie

by Sue F.
(Burlington, VT, USA)

We adopted Charlie as a 4-month-old kitten from our local humane society in February 2024 and don't have much information on his background.

He is very playful and affectionate, and enjoys climbing up the backs of his humans to ride around on our shoulders.

He also enjoys fetching toys! As you can see, he has some of the physical traits of a Maine Coon (most of all his magnificent plume of a tail!) but his most unique trait is his whisper-like "meow"!

These are the most recent photos of Charlie, taken at approximately 9 months old.

Kiwi or Coon

by Jerry D
(Kern County, Ca)

This is our shelter kitten KIWI. She is the calmest, most well behaved and gentle kitten.

She has a lot of characteristics of a Maine Coon. Tuffs of the ears, big feet with tuffs in between her toes, long fluffy tail.

We also caught her chittering and makes other weird noises our other cat doesn't. She is only 6 months old we think due to her coming from a shelter, but she's the size of our almost 1yr old tuxedo.

I personally hope she is at least a mix due to I would love a Maine Coon. Either way we all love her.

Beautiful markings
by: Mark F.

Such beautiful face stripes! My shelter cat was much smaller at 6 months but that could have been from malnourishment from being dumped. He has long surpassed the size of our other adult cats and is still growing, even at 19 months. Yours may be a coon mix. You will know for sure if your kitty keeps growing after 12 months.

I was told she was a Maine Coon kitten but I don’t think so. She’s not that big.

She’s only 8 weeks old, and although she’s different from my other domestic cat she’s still not looking like a Maine Coon to me.

She’s a black and white kitten and seems long with polydactyl paws.

Elliot definitely looks like a Maine Coon mix to me. About the same size mine was as 9 months. You will need a DNA test to know for sure, but I got mine tested and he is a Maine Coon mix. And yours looks just like mine, so I'd say "Yes. Maine Coon mix" :)

Distinct facial features

Distinct facial features

This is Willow! She is only 6 1/2 weeks old but has some distinctive features already.

Her paws are huge for her size. She has the lions mane or ruff around her neck. Her eye shape is similar to that of a Maine Coon and she has the beginning meow sound of them.

She’s an orange female and mom was a calico. We don’t know who dad is so thinking she’s half coon or Norwegian forest. She has a very loud purr and is SO mischievous and curious

Maine Coon Mix?

Just lounging

Just lounging

I got my baby kitty from foster care and they didn't know much about him but I have read articles on a lot of animals and keep coming back to being part Coonie!

He's 9 months old and I've only had him 3 months. He's about 9-10 lbs now and he's a beautiful boy!

He's got the fur coming outta his ears and hair growing from behind his ears and he has a slopped nose and his beautiful eyes slant up slightly.

His magnificent tale is long and fluffy and when he's got it up walking through the house he looks so majestic!

He's got a few layers of fur and the front of his chest looks like he's got his armor on! He has the cutest little meow but he also makes another sound a lot when we talk but it’s not a meow, I guess it’s more like a chirp but We talk and talk! lol

He's not a lap cat and I wish he would snuggle more but right at 3 a.m. he's waking me up laying on my chest just purring away!

I wish he would make it latter in the day but I’ll take any love I can get. He does follow me room to room so I have to be careful where I step because he's usually under my feet.

Whatever breed he is I am so thankful that we found one another because I love him with all my heart and he has really brightened my world the day I brought him home!

The middle pic is most recent so he's just a little bigger now. Thank You for any input you can give me.

Maine Coons come in many colors
by: Mark F.

I would say it is too young to tell by those pictures, especially if you don't know her parentage. Maine Coons can come in most any color or pattern. Mine current coon is pure black, my first was orange tabby. Both were mixes but grew larger than other adult cats. It will be easier to tell when she is 9 months or older. Either way, beautiful kitten and worthy of love. I hope you have a long life together :).

Oliver

This little kitten was found a couple days ago by a neighbor, who couldn’t keep him and asked if I wanted him knowing that I have two other cats I did decide to bring him in.

My daughter came over and she used to own a Maine coon. Another neighbor owns a Maine coon, and they both said oh look at the hair and his ears and the little hair on top and look at all the hair between his toes.

He looks like he could be a Maine Coon mix. Hoping he is happy no matter what because he’s absolutely adorable..

Sisters possibly mixed Maincoon

by Katrina
(South Carolina )

I fostered two 6 week old kittens that were brought in together and found on someone’s porch. Cinnamon, the tortie, likes to play fetch and has an abundance of energy.

She is very curious and follows me around the house. She and her tabby sister, FeeFee are shy with strangers. FeeFee is not as energetic as Cinnamon but still very playful.

FeeFee likes to watch me brush my teeth and is fascinated by water. She is a sweet cuddler and doesn’t mind being carried around.

She has enormous paws with all kinds of fur sticking out from them. They are 10 months old and are 11 and 10.5 lbs.

Maine Coon Mix?? Zorro

by Hope Krauel
(Jefferson City, TN, USA)

Sitting Pretty

Sitting Pretty

I’m not sure if my Zorro has got Maine Coon or Norwegian or both in him!

I rescued him a little over a month ago and he is going on 8 months old and about 9 lbs.

He has a sloped nose and when I was looking up cat breeds Norwegian came up. He’s a very determined little cat and wants to be loved on his time and play on his time!

Loves to lay behind my head propped up on the pillows or crawl up on my chest at 3 a.m. and push my hand to pet him while he’s purring away and that would be great if I was awake! lol

His fur is like silk and his hair is growing up over the ears on the back side and the fur coming out of ears.

His paws are big and fur growing out of them as well and his tails so big and fluffy! I am not sure what breed he is but I know I’m so thankful we found each other and it’s just me and him.

He loves my family and grand kids to when they come over. His body when stretched out is slanky as well and he isn’t crazy about being picked up and kind of goes limp when ya do pick him up but I am trying to get him use to it.

I wish he was more of a lap cat and I don’t know if he was kept in a cage the first six months of his life and that’s why he’s not but he’s young yet and I hope he will eventually like to snuggle more as he grows.

What do y’all think he is?? I could go on and on about him but I better end this here! Grateful for him!

He moves his bed from room to room so I never know where I will find it and keeps stealing the bathroom rug. He's very active and very amusing.

She has the lynx tips and her face scruff is growing in. Her tail expands like a skunk tail even though it looks like a raccoon tail, it has a lot of personality.

The Lion King

The Lion King

My Zorro is 6 months old and is a lovable curious kitty!

He loves trying to get into my closets when I open the door and I have to hold him back! He loves to play with his birdie on a stick and chases it! lol

I have only had him 3 weeks and I got him out of foster care but I feel they under fed him so he was on the skinny side.

I’ve now have him on a good eating schedule and he’s gained a little weight, probably 8 lbs now.

He has a long bushy tail and the hair growing out the ears and the fur behind the ears are starting to grow over the ears. He’s got good size paws and fur in between the toes.

His eyes and face look like a lion so I call him my Lion King Lol. I applied for a few Maine Coons but was always a day late until I found Zorro and I feel like he was meant for me being Maine Coon mixed or not.

This kitty has a special place in my heart and I’m so happy the powers that be sent him my way.
