Back Packs & Harnesses

Henri is 16 months old and is such a wonderful Coonie.

We are first time Coonie parents although I have had many different breeds in the last 50 years.

I hate to say one breed is better than another however our Maine Coon, Henri Is the Best.
We would love for him to enjoy the beautiful outdoors (we live in Panama)🇵🇦 but we won’t risk losing him.

PLEASE RECOMMEND YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH BACKPACKS AND HARNESSES. We are sure he would adapt very well like several kitties I’ve seen on reels.

It is impossible to return items to Amazon so I hope to get it right the first time.
Thank you,
Jackie G and Henri

Hi Jackie,

Henri sounds like such a wonderful Maine Coon - what a lucky boy to have such loving parents!

I completely understand wanting to give him a taste of the outdoors while keeping him safe.

Many Maine Coons enjoy leash walks and backpack rides, but finding the right gear can be tricky, especially since they’re such big cats!

For harnesses, fit and security are key. Maine Coons have strong bodies and thick fur, so an adjustable, escape-proof harness is a must.

Some great options have a vest-style design that distributes pressure evenly and prevents slipping out. Look for one with sturdy buckles and a snug (but not too tight) fit.

As for backpacks, weight capacity is important - Henri will need something spacious and well-ventilated.

Some cat backpacks are designed to hold larger cats comfortably, with reinforced bottoms and secure zippers. If he’s new to it, letting him explore the backpack indoors first can help him adjust.

Since returning items is difficult for you, hopefully, we can help narrow things down! I’ll share some specific recommendations below.

Meanwhile, I hope other Maine Coon owners will share - what harnesses or backpacks have worked for you? Let’s help Jackie and Henri find the perfect setup! 😊

Since Henri is a big boy and returning items isn’t an option, here are some well-reviewed, Maine Coon-friendly harnesses and backpacks to consider:

Top-Rated Harnesses for Maine Coons

Maine Coons need a secure, escape-proof harness that fits comfortably over their thick fur. Here are some of the best options:

1. Kitty Holster Cat Harness
  • Wide, vest-style design for security
  • Soft, breathable cotton material
  • Easy Velcro closures (no buckles digging into fur)
  • Best for cats who dislike step-in harnesses

2. Rabbitgoo Escape-Proof Cat Harness
  • Adjustable straps for a custom fit
  • Lightweight, breathable mesh
  • Buckles and Velcro combo for extra security
  • Comes with a sturdy leash

3. Travel Cat “The True Adventurer” Harness
  • Designed specifically for adventure cats
  • Durable, secure, and escape-resistant
  • Fully adjustable and padded for comfort

Tip: When choosing a harness, measure Henri’s girth carefully and ensure the fit is snug but not too tight. Start with short sessions indoors before venturing outside!

Best Backpacks for Large Cats

Since Maine Coons are big, not all cat backpacks will work. Here are some that can support their size and weight:
1. The Fat Cat Backpack by Travel Cat
  • Holds up to 25 lbs
  • Sturdy, well-ventilated, and comfortable to carry
  • Large viewing bubble or mesh window option

2. Petsfit Large Expandable Cat Backpack
  • Expands to give extra room
  • Holds up to 20 lbs
  • Plenty of ventilation and a soft, cozy interior

Lollimeow Large Space Capsule Backpack
  • Canvas and plastic materials
  • Holds pets up to 26lbs
  • Large bubble window for curious kitties
  • Top skylight

Tip: Before using a backpack outdoors, place a blanket or familiar item inside and let Henri explore it at home. Short trips around the house will help him get used to the experience!
